bear Are there any safety rules for parents and teachers?
tip the bear Yes, for all of us!
bear The danger of the Internet can be categorized into two:
Contents and Contacts
Contents
  • Encountering undesirable contents cannot perfectly be avoided, because of the nature of the Internet. However, you can lessen the danger by choosing sites that are listed as safe in the content.
You can use filtering programs but do not relay on them 100%. There are so many sites launched everyday in all countries and places.
  • Be aware that using a search site could return anything. When you are with your children, please do not try to use a search site for the general public, but one for children and education.
  • Be aware that "dangerous contents" are not equal to "adult sites" only. There are sites that appeal to their beliefs and try to get more advocates, that support seemingly illegal activities, that enjoy bizarre scenes which most of us cannot bear.

Contact: By Email, chat, or BBS (web-based Bulletin Board System)
    - Contents do not hurt you physically, but contacts can -
  • Undesired contact from someone
    Protect yourself by Ignoring it.
When you receive an attachment file from an unknown email address, please do not open it.
Any virus caution could be a false message. Please check Computer Incident Advisory Capability's Hoax mail page.

  • Contact from you
Try not to start flaming. We can always wait for hours or days to answer to others.

  • Contact between you and someone
Do not give your personal information unless you totally trust the person.
Do not try to meet off-line. This can cause anything to happen.
  • bear Always be with your children when using the Internet.

Most unfortunate events that started from the use of the Internet could have been prevented if children were with their family. This does not mean you have to sit with them at the computer, but be in the same room!
People who have the intention of reaching children will usually go away when they know that the child is not alone.
You should keep the right to the access of the Internet. Please do not let them surf the Internet home alone.

bearAnd, most importantly, talk with them and listen to them.

When the communication is good, then problems will be prevented or treated right.
Please check sometimes about what kind of unfortunate events have happened. This will give you and your children the time to talk practically about safety on the Internet, without making strict rules. Children will be careful when they know actual events. Please choose words and content according to their age and the level of understanding.

Kids' Space is hoping to create a site for safety education with many real examples.

bear Be aware that your information can be sent anywhere on the Internet.
